Driveshaft Frequently Asked Questions

—CAN YOU BALANCE INDIVIDUAL PIECES OF A MULTI-PIECE DRIVESHAFT?

No! 2 and 3 piece driveshafts need to be balanced as an entire assembly on our state of the art computerized balancer.

—I REPLACED MY U-JOINTS AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE AND NOW MY DRIVESHAFT VIBRATES. WHAT DID I DO WRONG?

It is possible that you put the driveshaft back together out of phase. It is possible that you bent a yoke ear when removing or installing the U-joints. You didn’t put the driveshaft in a vise did you? You need to have the driveshaft inspected and probably rebalanced.

—I REPLACED THE CENTER SUPPORT BEARING AND NOW THE DRIVESHAFT VIBRATES. WHAT DID I DO WRONG?

It is very possible that you put the driveshaft back out of phase. You need to have the driveshaft re-phased and possibly rebalanced.

—MY TRUCK HAS A LIFT KIT AND IT LOOKS LIKE MY DRIVESHAFT IS TOO SHORT. DOES THIS HAPPEN?

Yes! Depending on the type of lift kit, and how high your vehicle was lifted, your rear driveshaft could be too short. The driveshaft will need to be lengthened (re-tubed) and balanced to correct this problem.

—I LOWERED MY VEHICLE AND NOW I HAVE A VIBRATION. WHY?

Now that your vehicle has been lowered you have changed the angle of the driveshaft from the transmission to the rear differential. This angle needs to be corrected to eliminate the vibration.

—I LOWERED MY VEHICLE AND NOW THE DRIVESHAFT IS TOO LONG. HOW DO I CORRECT THIS?

You need to have the driveshaft shortened and re-balanced.

—MY VEHICLE VIBRATES AT 40MPH AND THEN GETS WORSE AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

There are any number of things that can cause a vehicle vibration. One of them is a driveshaft with worn out parts or a driveshaft that is out of balance. Determine where you are feeling the vibration, in the seat or in the steering wheel, and that will go a long way to determining where the vibration is coming originating.

—MY VEHICLE MAKES A HUMMING NOISE WHILE DRIVING. WHAT IS CAUSING THIS?

Most commonly this “humming” noise is caused by an out-of-balance driveshaft. You would need to have the driveshaft balanced.

—I HAVE A LIFT KIT INSTALLED ON MY PICKUP AND NOW I HAVE A SHUDDER WHENEVER I TAKE OFF FROM LIGHTS OR STOP SIGNS. WHAT IS CAUSING THIS?

With the lift kit installed you now have a driveshaft angle problem. You need to correct the angle problem and then make sure your driveshaft isn’t too short now that the vehicle has been lifted.

—MY VEHICLE “PINGS” OR “KLUNKS” WHEN I PUT IT INTO EITHER DRIVE OR REVERSE. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

Chances are you have excessive play in the drivetrain. This could be in the driveshaft, the transmission, the transfer case (if it’s a 4×4 vehicle) or the differential.
